Acrobatic Gymnastics is a sport which combines the power and athletic prowess of Tumbling and Artistic Gymnastics with the grace, artistry and presentation of dance. Athletes compete in Pairs, Trios or Fours. In the first round of competition, each group presents two choreographed routines: The Balance Exercise demonstrates strength, agility and flexibility. Its beautiful pyramids and static holds require immense concentration and cooperation among the partners. The Dynamic Exercise uses rhythmic tumbling, and "flight" elements. Daring throws, pitches, catches, and tumbling sequences punctuate the choreography. In Finals, a third routine is presented, which combines elements of both the Balance and Dynamic exercises.
Acrobatic Gymnastics is one of 5 disciplines under the auspices of USA Gymnastics, the official governing body for the sport. USA Gymnastics is responsible for the training and development of the teams and athletes who represent the US in the Olympics, World Championships and World Cup competition.
